A multi-sensory room for children with multiple disabilities

On November 24, a multi-sensory room was opened in the space of Tbilisi public school N200, which was organized collaboratively by World Vision Georgia Tbilisi Urban Program and the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, in order to support children with multiple disabilities. 

The multi-sensory space was opened by Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Georgia- Eka Dgebuadze along with the Director of World Vision Georgia - Ekaterine Gurgenadze.

With the initiative and support of World Vision Georgia Tbilisi Urban Program, a multi-sensory room configuration and teachers’ training project was developed jointly with N200 Public School based on the project concept and module developed by the Educational Program Department of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia.  Within the initiative, a special space was allocated in the premises and the rooms were equipped with appropriate developmental resources. A group of teachers, educators along with a psychologist and social therapist were trained accordingly covering a 40-hour training course on the topic of “Utilizing the elements of sensory integration in the educational space” expected to start working with more than 60 students from 2021. At the end of cenemony, Deputy Minister and WVG Director granted all teachers with Certificates of Completion.

Multi-sensory room is a therapeutic space with the variety of equipment, providing students with specials needs the opportunity to learn essential skills including: improving student engagement in the process of learning, facilitating a communication competencies, enhancing concentration and developing sensory fields like touch, movement as well as visual, auditory and visual stimulation. 

World Vision Georgia has been working and striving for child protection and welfare field since 1996 and within its programs aims to provide support to the target educational institutions through infrastructural projects, material as well as technical resources, promoting non-formal education, establishing school clubs, upgrading staff and teacher competencies along with advancement of educational process management.
